THE PARIS CORRESPONDENCE SCHOOL: MAIL ART

Just when you thought it was safe to open your mail box, this project comes bursting in... À VOS VOEUX, PRÊTS ... POSTEZ !

Organized by Christian Balmier, the MAIL ART 2010 exhibition is this year's answer to unpaid bills, junk mail and the Tapis D'Orient flyers that litter your hallways.

The artists involved have long irritated post office workers, mailmen and women, and in general created havoc where the postal system is concerned. And not only in France, but world wide. (Me, too).  So it's bound to be great fun visually, emotionally, historically, philosophically and postally.

See the web site and the artists and all details here.

Click here to see the Artist list.

A strange and wonderful mail art cadavre exquis where four artists work on a piece in a round, some 25 examples of this surrealist game will be on view at beginning December 16, 2010 at Galerie SPARTS 41, rue de Seine - 75006 PARIS.   MAP.

If you are in Paris, or know someone who will be, be sure to attend the Cocktail-Vernissage le jeudi 16 décembre de 18 à 21h. (December 16, 2010 Opening Party).  It will be huge. You must come! Metro: Odéon.

Among the artists involved:

Jean-Michel ALBEROLA, Jean-Paul ALBINET, Christian BALMIER, BEN VAUTIER, Yvon BOHERS, Alain BRESSON, José-Garcia CORDERO, Charlélie COUTURE, Henri CUECO, Pierre DESSONS, Hervé DI ROSA, Philippe DRUILLET, Yann DUGAIN, Marc GIAI-MINIET, Gérard GUYOMARD, Abraham HADAD, Michel HERGIBO, Michel HOSSZÙ, Pierre JOINUL, Eliane LARUS, Gérard LE CLOAREC, Yves LÉVÊQUE, LJUBA, Fédérica MATTA, Jérôme MESNAGER, Ricardo MOSNER, Mehdi QOTBI, RABA, Matthew ROSE, Sélim SAIAH, Sacha SOSNO, Roland TRUC, Béatrice TURQUAND D'AUZAY, Michel TYSZBLAT, Vladimir VELICKOVIC, Jacques VIMARD and William WILSON.

Voir Le Site.

Cool Hunting Video: Kim Rugg

Kim Rugg from Cool Hunting on Vimeo.

KIM RUGG.

From Cool Hunting: "Some people like taking their time," says artist Kim Rugg, whose artistic achievements are measured in millimeters, used X-ACTO blades and picas. We spent the afternoon with Rugg in her London home and studio talking about her work re-imagining newspapers, comics, stamps and cereal boxes using their existing form while rearranging their content. Kim finds inspiration from the mundane and common objects around us. Her wicked knife skills and tenacious attention to detail have created a body of work that is as impressive as it is curious."

Make Your Own Artist Stamps: Michel Hosszù

Michel Hosszù, the French artist known the world over for his stamps – Marquis de Sade, Coluche, Famous People, Warhol, Van Gogh's Self Portraits and thousands of other editions for individual artists – will print your own designs as stamps. Individual stamps, small sheets and large format sheets permit artists to create limited editions of varying kinds.

Michel Hosszù has long practiced mail art with a focus on stamps. Several works from the 1980s feature the red Marianne French postage stamp covering entire canvases. The artist says: "I used to work in a factory where my job was to get rid of mailed envelopes, so I peeled off thousands of these canceled stamps." Other strange and wonderful objects have sailed in and out of his Bastille studio over the decades.

Michel has also helped me produce my limited edition, Rubens Rounding Third, an ode to baseball, art and the sexy gaze of an amorous public and player.

Artists, photographers, designers and others have the opportunity now to produce their own stamps using whatever image and text they desire. Formats vary, so it's best to take a good look at how to organize an edition using these design grids.

Cost is relatively minor compared to the impact of these great little works of art. My guess is they'll also make interesting gifts for people who want to immortalize a friend or a pet or even, hey! an idea on a stamp.

Ray Johnson. Please Add to & Return

Ray Johnson. Please Add to & Return
28 February – 10 May 2009

Thank you Alex Sainsbury for bringing Ray Johnson to London.

Raven Row’s inaugural exhibition is the first large UK show of the collages and mailings of New York artist Ray Johnson (1927–1995). Johnson used radical means to construct and distribute images, inadvertently inventing the ‘mail art movement’. He made art out of social life – both real and imagined – gathering celebrities, the art world, and friends into his work. His influence on twentieth century art far exceeds the recognition he receives.

‘Ray Johnson. Please Add to & Return’ will represent Johnson’s mailings, objects he regarded as gifts and thus contrary to the market, equally with the collage works he made for gallery exhibition in the sixties and seventies. Also included will be the collages he subjected to a seemingly endless process of reworking and overlaying, which were found signed with multiple dates and neatly arranged in his house at the time of his death.
